Stewardship of Gifts

Gifts symbolShare God’s generous gifts of knowledge, talent, experience, aptitude, time, energy, and interest.

Lord, your love and generosity toward us, your children, is beyond all that we could imagine.  Help us always to be mindful that all that we have comes from you.  Teach us to be respectful stewards, caring for your blessings, and using the specific gifts you give to each of us to build up your body, the church – in our parish, homes, and families – and in our community so that all that we do will honor you.  We pray in the name of your son Jesus.

“As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.  For one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…”  St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians

All the Baptized are called to discipleship.  Following Jesus is the work of a lifetime…Being a disciple is not just something to do, alongside many other things suitable for Christians, it is a total way of life.  The community of disciples should call forth and nurture each other’s gifts.  People do not hear the Lord’s call in isolation from one another… Vocations are communicated, discerned, accepted, and lived out in a community of faith which is a community of disciples.

We possess all the gifts we need to make a difference in the world – to build the  body of Christ.  Because the Church’s individual members do collectively make up the body of Christ, that body’s health and well-being are the responsibility of the members – the personal responsibility of each one of us.  If any member withholds his or her gift, the vitality of the Body suffers.  The Church is built up through personal participation in and support of the Church’s mission of proclaiming and teaching, serving and sanctifying.

We use our gifts in all aspects of our life – both inside the church doors and beyond – in our families, workplaces, neighborhoods and communities.
